Lord of the Flies - Theme

*What is the major theme of thie novel? Why it this theme important to a teenager living in 2007?

Social and governmental faults are from individual people’s defect. Thus, a society has to have a defect and individual people who form a society control the defect.

The major theme of this novel was 'democracy verses anarchy.' For instance, Ralph's group wanted to build shelters and have rules while Jack's group wanted to hunt and be wild. At first, the boys tended to follow Ralph because he won the vote. However, as Jack rebelled, frustrated with jealousy, the group's order became very neglectful and soon disappeared. Because the boys were not mature enough, they tended to follow the lifestyle of anarchy. Without any adults who can supervise and control them, the boys became more savage.

This phenomenon is important because teenagers often rebel to their parents and dream about a world without rules and hierarchies. However, they need to realize the fact that there are no lives without rules. Immature individuals like teenagers cannot govern themselves just like this novel. There will always be a person who opposes one’s idea. If a leader cannot control such arguments, the society will fall into a chaotic situation. As pre-mature humans, teenagers lack the ability to make right decisions. Thus, teenagers will need to consider and understand what will happen if a society lacks rules and becomes chaotic.

Moreover, another major theme of this novel was the human political society. As mentioned before, younger boys had to always obey the older boys. For instance, Sam and Eric had no power so they just followed Jack's order. On the other hand, older boys always tended to ignore the younger ones. Just like today's people who are in politically higher positions, the older boys' role was to distribute jobs and control younger ones while the younger ones had to labor without any complaints.

WOW, you have a deep thinking about the theme referring to modern society. The rebellion of the kids described the disobedience of modern teenagers agianst their parents. But the rebellion was between two groups of boys not between boys and adults. Were you trying to say that the social structure of the boys and the modern teenagers are similar?
The idea of weaker people obeying to stronger or higher people was very consenting and approving. The human political society makes us to obey to stronger people. Do you want to rebel agianst them or should we just stay still for our own sake? ;)

I both agree and disagree with your idea for the theme. It is true that "Democrocy vs. monarchy" is implied in the book, but for the theme, I went further, or to a different direction. It might sound a bit childish, but mine is "good vs. evil." meaning the humanity of things like civilizations against wildness or like cruelty. the 'kids,' who are supposed to be innocent and kind, are discribed as a killer.
But still, I very agree with the part about adults needing to guide the children.

I can see how you would get this theme. The system of governing did, in a way, affect the course of events. However, I think the major theme is the struggle between our conscience of morality and the darkness that lies within every human being. This becomes evident through Ralph's initial motivations and the change of Jack's position into an antagonist. All the characters take part in at least one plunge into blood lust and savagery. An example is the violent murder of Simon. Simon was an exception. He was unaffected by the moods of corruption and remained a mystical figure who died trying to reveal the truth of the "beast" to the kids. In sum, the terms of development in the boys' conscience is in higher concern than the outer events.
